Nothing, of course, is actually unbreakable. Even diamonds can be split. Epoxy surfboards might be “supposed” to be unbreakable, but they aren’t, and epoxy surfboard repair is pretty common for something that isn’t meant to happen. Because it isn’t meant to be necessary, epoxy surfboard repair is also extremely annoying – it’s harder to get epoxy surfboard repair kits for epoxy boards, because you “don’t need them”; and traditional, non epoxy surfboard repair stores generally don’t have the gear to help you out.

A traditional surfboard is made of foam and glass. Non epoxy surfboard repair is a matter of stripping back damaged areas of glass, smoothing out and injecting new foam, and re-glassing. Epoxy surfboards are made of a lightweight plasticky substance that doesn’t need strengthening (apparently). Which means that epoxy surfboard repair involves effectively remoulding the thing from scratch: if you try and refit a snapped nose in an epoxy surfboard repair you have to heat the board up, remarry the two sundered parts and reform it using clamps.
Confusingly, the one thing epoxy surfboard repair is good for, is fixing small dings in fibreglass boards. A fibreglass board holds its shape, which makes an epoxy surfboard repair compound ideal for quick fixes – the epoxy can be pasted straight into a hole, where, if it’s been treated with a quick-setting agent, it will harden almost immediately. The major manufacturers of surfboard material are also starting to bring out epoxy surfboard repair compounds that work for large jobs on glass boards: but if you’re looking for an epoxy surfboard repair for an epoxy board, forget it. It’s easier to fill the cracks with auto glass and leave it at that...
